Preparing for Publication

Copyediting

What to Expect

  • Your text will be edited in Microsoft Word using Track Changes, so you can review each edit.

  • Along with your marked-up text, you will receive an editorial letter explaining significant edits (those seen most often/those having the greatest impact).

  • Copyediting often occurs in two rounds: After the first round, the text is returned to the author to review and approve changes. The second round is done to make those changes, address any additional edits, and polish the piece for publication.

  • Corrects all indisputable errors in grammar, syntax, and usage

  • Ensures consistency in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and other mechanics

  • Draws attention to wordy, confusing, or wandering sections

  • Reviews tables, figures, in-text citations, footnotes or endnotes, and reference list or bibliography

  • Questions terms that are likely unfamiliar to the intended audience

  • Points out elements that may require permission to reprint

  • Points out factual inconsistencies or statements that seem false
